Energy Storage in the U.K.'s Capacity Market
Energy Storage Booms, But Will the Opportunity Last?
A total of 500 megawatts of energy storage cleared the 2016 T-4 U.K. capacity auction. Just a few months later, only 10 MW of energy storage systems cleared the T-1 capacity auction for delivery the next winter. This research note examines the capacity auction results within the broader regulatory framework in the U.K. to determine whether these results are signposts for a broader trend. It also models participation in the capacity market to determine just what economic factors drove this surge of planned projects.
