Asset Report
Alpha Metallurgical Resources coal mines
Report summary
Contura was created in 2016, as one of two companies that emerged from the bankruptcy of Alpha Natural Resources. Contura received most of the "core" assets and is one of the primary producers of high volatile metallurgical coal in the region. In 2018, Contura and Alpha merged back together under the Contura name to become the largest US metallurgical coal producer. In 2021, Contura announced a name change to Alpha Metallurgical Resources, to highlight its focus on metallurgical coal production. As of 2022, the company controls 13 operating complexes and one probable project in Appalachia.
