Asset Report
Arch Resources Powder River Basin coal mines
Report summary
Arch Resources (Arch) owns two operating mines in the PRB: Black Thunder and Coal Creek. They produce thermal coal for the domestic power sector. Arch is the second largest coal producer in the PRB, accounting for one-quarter of the basin's total output in 2023. Rail service in the west has improved in 2023, but as the domestic utility market weakens, some Arch contracted deliveries will be pushed into 2024. Wood Mackenzie’s asset reports are built from the bottom up, incorporating a number of granular data metrics to ultimately produce our industry standard cash operating costs. This qualitative analysis is supplemented by the associated Excel download which enables interrogation of a whole series of cost and production metrics over the life of the assets.
