Historically, most propylene has been produced as a by-product from steam crackers or refineries. In the future, production from on-purpose technologies will grow much faster than these traditional by-product processes. The advent of on-purpose production will structurally alleviate the propylene supply tightness in China. This two-part Insight will focus on the two main on-purpose technologies, propane dehydrogenation and methanol-to-olefins/methanol-to-propylene, that are prevalent in China.
