Report summary
Within our 2023 Investment Horizon Outlook, we analyse how seaborne metallurgical coal demand will grow in the next ten years, driven primarily by India and Southeast Asia. Current supply projections show that operating capacity will meet demand until late in the outlook. However, new mine investments will still be needed this decade in an environment that is increasingly hostile to coal investment. Miners face growing environmental, social and governance (ESG) pressures, and uncertainty around demand- and supply-side carbon policies. This outlook shows how the global metallurgical coal market will develop over the coming decade.
