Commodity Market Report
North America coal short-term outlook July 2022
Report summary
At a time when domestic utilities are demanding more coal to meet load over the summer months, producers are lowering their sales forecasts for 2022. Deficient rail service, particularly in the western US, is being blamed for missed targets and delayed shipments. Coal generation has been throttled back to more modest levels, and natural gas resources are bearing the brunt of the load to meet excessive cooling demand this season.
