Commodity Market Report
North America short-term outlook January 2022
Report summary
Mild temperatures and strong gas storage allowed utilities to continue protecting their stockpiles in December, yielding record-low coal generation and a much-needed stockpile build. However, this month’s colder temps prompted a rise in coal-fired dispatch in line with seasonal norms. Generators relied heavily on their stocks once again – now on track to quickly erode the build they accumulated in the recent months.
