China's National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has materially revised historical coal consumption, close to Wood Mackenzie's view of actual demand. The timing of the data release is due to improvements in how China collects coal statistics and a drive for more accurate data ahead of the 13th Five Year Plan. With higher reported coal consumption, achieving future emissions targets will be easier to achieve, especially the government's goal to peak carbon emissions around 2030.
