The mood at the recently concluded Coaltrans World conference at Copenhagen was overwhelmingly bearish on thermal coal prices. We met with over 40 market participants, and few if any had a strong rationale for increasing prices either in the Pacific, or in Europe. With continued pressures on the cost curve, we see further scope for pricing floors at different levels: expect to see some near term price shocks in the US$60/t range for ARA in the upcoming months.
