February’s seizure of power by Myanmar’s military has cast immediate doubt over the timing and sources of future investment in the country. The energy sector is feeling the brunt of this, with the outlook for the upstream sector in particular doubt. Each foreign company active in Myanmar will have its own assessment of ESG risk and varying home government and shareholder pressure following the coup. And while a blanket withdrawal looks highly unlikely, what is more certain is that Myanmar’s energy sector is set for fresh challenges.
