Australia is the world’s top exporter of coal, minerals and LNG. It exported nearly 70% of domestic production last year. Fugitive emissions from the upstream sector have consistently risen, offsetting savings from renewables electricity. Non-power industries remain energy inefficient and the share of hydrocarbons averaged 94% last year. As a highly mature market, Australia’s macro growth is expected to moderate through to 2040 despite a modest increase in population. This means energy demand will soon begin to plateau and decline longer term. Managing the trade-off between commodity exports and environmental goals will be crucial.
