Europe gas demand: 2020 in review
Report summary
European demand In 2020 was governed by three major factors – a mild winter, record low gas prices and of course the coronavirus pandemic. Economic drivers across Europe were curtailed in 2020 as governments imposed measures to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, shutting down entire sectors of the economy. The impact of warmer than average weather through 2019-20 winter reverberated through the remainder of the year. Record low summer hub prices followed by a strong recovery into winter – shaping coal-to-gas switching dynamics and injection levels.
