Malaysia gas markets: 2019 long-term regional outlook

Report summary

Gas markets play different dynamics on Peninsular and East Malaysia. While Peninsular Malaysia sees a soft gas demand growth in the coming years, with the main driver being the industry sector, power generation in Sarawak will create new gas demand in that region. Sarawak's gas will continue flowing to the LNG plants in Bintulu as the Sabah-Sarawak Gas Pipeline finally reaches its full nominal capacity. Gas demand growth in Sabah will come from the power sector and industry. Gas supply in Peninsular Malaysia is expected to drop more quickly after 2022, when LNG imports will be increasingly needed to fill this gap. Long-term supply growth potential lies in East Malaysia. However, the future supply to Bintulu faces some challenges as many of the undeveloped fields in Sarawak are high on CO2 and H2S. In the policy front, Malaysia has implemented a Third-party Access framework but no new players have entered the market.
