Cartagena is located at Escombreras port and began operations in 1989 and originally supplied regasified volumes for nearby industrial demand but has since been connected to the Spanish gas grid. There have been a series of expansions over the last few years and capacity is now 1,209 mmcfd (9.1 mmtpa). The terminal's marine facilities were upgraded in 2009 to accommodate Q-max tankers, and a fifth storage tank was added in October 2010. The terminal can carry out re-loads, transshipments, truck loadings (50 per day capacity) and loading of bunkering ships from the terminal or from trucks. The terminals LNG carrier loading capacity is 1,650m³/h for medium to large ships and 820m³/h for small vessels.
