Report summaryThe deposit is at an elevation of some 4400m - 4700m above sea level and was discovered by the Incas. Prior to 1984 ore was transported by a 3km aerial tramway. Electrical power is supplied from a gas-fired generator, which was completed in late-2002 to produce energy at a cost of around 5c/kWh. The open pit is expected to close in 2015 upon depletion of reserves and major work needs to be done in order to supplement these reserves with increased underground mine production.
