Operated by SQM Salar S.A, Atacama (SQM) is a lithium brine project located in Antofagasta, Chile. Now one of two major operators at the Salar de Atacama salt lake, SQM commenced production of lithium chemicals as a by-product in 1993. After several expansions, the current capacity is 120ktpy of lithium carbonate and 21.5ktpy of lithium hydroxide. This is expected to be expanded further to 250ktpy and 40ktpy respectively by 2025. The operation uses evaporation ponds. Wood Mackenzie’s asset reports are built from the bottom up, incorporating several granular data metrics to ultimately produce our industry-standard cash operating costs. This report contains a detailed asset note giving you a holistic view of the asset, including an operational overview through to a timeline of events from inception to now. This qualitative analysis is supplemented by the associated Excel download which enables interrogation of a whole series of cost and production metrics over the life of the asset.
