Construction of the smelter started in 2005, with completion and commissioning in May 2006. Design capacity was 100kt/a slab zinc and 190kt/a sulphuric acid. The smelter uses the Jarosite residue process. Commissioning of an expansion of the smelter by 100kt/a to 200kt/a slab zinc, comprising a separate plant alongside the existing smelter was completed in 2009. Most plant areas were twinned in the expansion, however only one casting plant is used for both production lines.
