The smelter was commissioned in 1980 with a capacity of 35kt/a zinc (tankhouse-limited) and 52kt/a sulphuric acid at a cost of US$63M, location being chosen through fiscal incentives. Ownership was by a private company, Companhia Paraibuna de Metais (CPM).
