Challenger (Gawler) gold mine
Report summary
The Challenger gold mine is located 140km North West of Tarcoolo in South Australia. Open pit mining commenced in mid-2002 and was completed by April 2004 to the final design depth of 125m below surface. Underground development started in February 2004. A new mining contractor was selected in 2013 to improve efficiency and cut costs. WPG Resources went into administration in August 2018 due to insolvency issue. As a result, Challenger gold mine was put on care and maintenance in October 2018.
