Codli iron ore mine

Report summary

The Codli group of surface iron ore mines (Codli) commenced operations in 1973. Codli is located in South Goa, approximately 50 kilometres south east of Panaji, Goa State, India. Codli is wholly owned by Vedanta Limited, which is majority owned by Vedanta Resources. Iron ore mining in the state of Goa recommenced after a two year ban although Vedanta are limited to producing 5.5 Mtpa (dry). Vedanta was allocated a 5.5 Mtpa production cap but produced more than this in 2016 and 2017. In February 2018, it was announced that the licences and permits awarded in 2015 were deemed invalid by the Supreme Court and that mining must cease by 16 March 2018. Given the mining ban, and the marginal nature of Vedanta's Goan mines, we have assumed that the mines will cease production, indefinitely, from this year.
