This South African smelter project has been under study since 1996. In December 1998 it was announced that Mitsui Mining and Smelting, which originally had a 24.5% stake in the project, had pulled out, and a new partner was being sought. Mitsui's withdrawal left the project requiring another partner and further delays resulted. The project here assumed the original flowsheet of the late 1990s.
