Two events will impact China’s copper scrap market in 2020: the coronavirus pandemic and the country’s new standards that re-categorise high-quality copper and brass scrap as renewable materials, exempting them from existing restrictions on copper scrap imports. In this insight, we analyse these two events and present our view on how they will impact scrap supply and demand in China this year. In addition, we review the changes to China’s policy on scrap imports since 2018, and outline how the government stance on copper scrap imports has evolved.
