Smelting began at the El Paso smelter site in 1887 with a small lead smelter designed to treat Mexican ores, and in 1889 was incorporated into the newly organised Asarco. Copper smelting facilities were added at the turn of the century to treat the increasing production from mines in the Southwest USA.
