The smelter was commissioned in December 1955 to treat concentrates from the Gaspé mine. At commissioning the smelter operated a single green charge reverberatory furnace, two Peirce-Smith converters and a stationary anode furnace. In the early 1970s a fluid bed roaster was added and the reverberatory furnace converted to calcine charging.
