Report summary
The aluminium market service short-term outlook (STO) is published monthly and provides a forecast of aluminium supply and demand fundamentals over the next two-years. The aluminium market together with the base metals complex experienced a broad sell-off during August. The bearish spell was fuelled by growing doubts of a swift resolution to tensions between the US and China. Adding to the trade worries, the announcement of the doubling of tariffs against Turkey was the final straw for commodity investors who took flight to safer assets. The aluminium LME cash price dipped from a US$ 2,117/t at the beginning of the month to just below the US$ 2,000/t during the third week of August. The prices recouped losses in the last days of August fuelled by the sudden turnaround in investors’ sentiment following progress in NAFTA negotiations.
