Prices for key magnet rare earths increased in December as order activity picked up ahead of the Chinese spring festival closures in January 2023. Improved purchasing could continue supporting prices throughout Q1 2023; however, the recent reversal on Covid-19 policies within China has created some short-term uncertainty. Global economic challenges and widespread Covid-19 outbreaks within China continue to impact market sentiment. Despite this, demand for key magnet applications, namely offshore wind and electric vehicles, remains strong, driving an average annual increase in rare earth demand of 5.3% to 2026. In order to increase diversity and security of supply, ROW developers are aiming to establish and expand rare earth supply chains outside of China. However, the recent decision from China’s state reserve bureau to purchase heavy rare earth stockpile material from the state owned enterprises highlights the reluctance to relinquish market control.
