The Lanping ore deposit was discovered in the 1970s and was initially exploited by a number of small mines and smelters, one of the latter was Huangmu. By 2003, the Huangmu smelter had fallen within the ownership of Yunnan Jinding where it was called the No1 smelter, Lanping is No2. At the end of 2011, it was decided to close the Huangmu smelter in 2012 and concentrate all operations at the larger Lanping smelter.
