Asset Report
Kolomela iron ore mine
Report summary
Kolomela is located in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. The mine is operated by Kumba, who are 76.3% owned by Anglo American. The mine's production comprises 65% lump (at 65.0% Fe) and 35% fines (at 64.5% Fe) which are railed to Saldanha for export. In 2022, Kolomela's production decreased by 17% to 10.7 Mt, but we expect the total output will rise to about 12 Mt in 2023 due to better logistic availability. Ongoing wage inflation, higher diesel prices, and rising power and water costs will put pressure on total costs but ongoing currency weakness has the potential to offset some of these increases. Kumba continues to seek savings at both its sites from equipment optimisation and efficiency and productivity improvements.
