Kolomela is located in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. The mine is operated by Kumba, who are 76.3% owned by Anglo American. The mine's production is comprised of 65% lump (at 65.0% Fe) and 35% fines (at 64.5% Fe) which is railed to Saldanha for export. Kolomela's production in 2019 will be approximately 0.9 Mt lower than in 2018 due to an upgrade of the dense media separation (DMS) plant in the first two quarters of the year. Output should return to 13.9 Mtpa in 2020 and for the life of the mine. Ongoing wage inflation, higher diesel prices, and rising power and water costs will put pressure on total costs but ongoing currency weakness has the potential to offset some of these increases. Kumba continues to seek savings at both its sites from equipment optimisation and efficiency and productivity improvements and is on track to achieve its 2019 cost-saving targets.
