Kosaka smelter has been smelting complex ores for more than 100 years. Initially smelting was mainly for silver but in 1901 pyritic smelting using blast furnaces was introduced to treat the local black ore. In 1956 a roasting/hydrometallurgical process was introduced to treat a bulk copper/zinc concentrate produced from the black ore.
