Mexicana de Cobre started construction in late 1995 of a 180kt/a cathode refinery adjacent to the existing smelter, where capacity was being increased from 184kt/a anode to 300kt/a anode. The initial plan was for mechanical completion in September 1997 with commissioning in December 1997.
