La Caridad copper smelter
Report summary
Construction of the smelter commenced on a greenfield site in July 1979. Lack of finance resulted in frequent interruptions to construction and generally slow progress. Start-up without an acid plant was finally achieved in June 1986 at a capital cost of US$376M. Serious commissioning problems were encountered, mainly due to an inexperienced labour force.
