The refinery is located at Hettstedt, 70km northwest of Leipzig in the former East Germany. It has good road and rail links. Copper mining has been carried out at Hettstedt since 1199 and the company is said to be the first in the world to refine copper using the electrolytic process. The present refinery dates from 1938.
