Maritime transport is vital for the global and EU economies but is a major source of CO2 emissions, contributing 2-3% of global and 3-4% of EU emissions in 2022. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set new greenhouse gas reduction targets for 2025. Meanwhile, the EU is incorporating maritime emissions into its Emissions Trading System (ETS) to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. This Insight examines the inclusion of maritime emissions in the EU ETS, outlines the related obligations, and evaluates the impact on dry bulk shipping on the Brazil to Europe iron ore route. It also provides a forward-looking view on EU carbon pricing.
