The occurrence of bauxite was first recorded in 1920 and 1921 in northern Sierra Leone. The mine was closed in 2000 by its then owner Alusuisse and re-opened in 2005 by Sierra Rutile Ltd. Vimetco acquired the mine from Sierra Rutile in 2008 and since then has operated the mine and sent the majority of the mined ore to its alumina refinery in Romania. Mokanji is the only active bauxite mine in Sierra Leone.
