Niihama nickel refinery

Nickel production commenced at Sumitomo Metal Mining Co Ltd in 1939 when nickel ores were smelted to anodes and refined to nickel by electrolysis. Direct matte electrolysis was introduced in 1970. Cobalt production commenced in 1975 when Sumitomo began treating mixed nickel-cobalt sulphides.
