Report summary

The Olympic Dam integrated mine mill smelter and refinery complex was constructed as a joint venture between Western Mining Corporation and BP Minerals. The smelter was commissioned in July 1988 with a capacity of 55kt/a copper and 90kt/a acid. Early problems were encountered with hot metal handling dust and gas handling foaming into the waste heat boiler and waste heat boiler tube failures.
