The Overpelt smelter in Belgium was closed in 1992 having been a zinc production facility since 1934. Although not actively smelting zinc today, the Overpelt site is highly integrated with Nyrstar’s European smelters and acts as their centralised melting and casting facility. A proportion of cathode produced at Auby all of Balen's cathodes are transported to Overpelt for melting and casting. The facility today has a capacity to produce 200kt/a Zamak alloy and 200kt/a SHG Zinc.
