The plant is located at Samsun on the Black Sea coast approximately 320km northeast of Ankara. The smelter uses Outokumpu flash furnace and Peirce-Smith converter technology and was commissioned in 1973. A major expansion project was started in early 1987 to expand the capacity to 39kt/a copper and 282kt/a acid.
