The smelter was originally constructed in 1956 to treat green feed using one reverberatory furnace and three Peirce-Smith converters. During the late 1960s and early 1970s it was expanded to three reverberatory furnaces and six Peirce-Smith converters. In 1974 a double train single contact acid plant was built to process gases from the converters.
