Zinc production commenced by the Evans-Wallower Zinc Company at Sauget in 1929 but stopped in 1931 due to economic conditions. American Zinc Company restarted production in 1941. Following significant expansion to 73kt/a, the plant was closed in 1971. In 1972 the plant was acquired by AMAX, allowing it to close its horizontal distillation plant in Oklahoma. Big River Minerals Corporation purchased the smelter from AMAX in August 1988, and raised capacity to 80kt/a slab zinc. The...
