Mining ceased in 2011, but stockpiled ore is shipped to the Ridder smelter for processing in the Waelz kiln, supplementing other feed sources to the smelter. Shaimerden is operated by Kazzinc, in which Glencore took a controlling interest in 2013. On 8th October 2015, Glencore announced their plans to reduce mine production by 500,000t of zinc metal per annum across its operations in Australia, South America and Kazakhstan. The primary reasoning for this is in an effort to preserve the value of Glencore's reserves in the low price environment. These planned reductions in ore processed is reflected in the accompanying profile.
