In late December 2023, SQM announced it had reached a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Codelco for the operation and development of the Salar de Atacama from 2025 to 2060. The proposal is that a new operating company will be set up to operate lithium production and other mineral substances in the Salar de Atacama. The new company will be owned 50% minus one share by SQM and 50% plus one share by Minera Tarar (i.e., Codelco). In this insight, we discuss the current agreement details, its implications and explore whether this agreement will yield the maximum benefit for Chile.
