In 1980 a new company, Padaeng Industry Co was set up with 43% ownership by the Thai government, 47% by Sino Thai Engineering and Construction, and 10% Bangkok Bank, to develop the Mae Sod zinc silicate deposit and to construct a zinc refinery. In 1981 the Belgian companies, Mechim and Vieille Montagne (VM) took up a 30% interest and provided leaching know-how. The project was delayed as a result of the Vietnam war but construction started in early 1983 and was completed in late 1984...
