Previously mining at Tonopah was from a 20kt/d open pit molybdenum and copper mine commissioned by Molycorp in 1981. Operating at full capacity metal production was 2kt/a copper and 8kt/a molybdenum. Operations were suspended in 1983 restarted in 1984 suspended in 1985 restarted by new owners Cyprus Minerals in 1989 and then closed in 1991.
