Report summary

Sumitomo has operated major copper smelters in Ehime prefecture since 1893.  Pollution was a major problem until a neutralisation plant was built in 1939.  In 1969 construction started on a large, modern and pollution free smelter to replace the Shisakajima smelter.  The Toyo smelter was commissioned in 1971 with a capacity of 850t/d concentrate.  The acid plant was uprated to a double contact system in 1978 and an oxygen plant was added in 1982.  Further oxygen plants were added in 1989 and...
