In April 2017, the US Department of Commerce began an investigation into the effects of steel and aluminium imports on national security under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962. The conclusions were delivered to the President of the US this February within the required 270 days of initiation. On 1 March, the White House declared a universal tariff on all steel imports (including stainless) of 25%, and 10% on aluminium, to become effective within 15 days.
