Voisey's Bay nickel operation
Report summary
The original Voisey's Bay discovery was made in 1993 by Archean Resources while conducting a regional diamond exploration programme for Diamond Fields. The integrated Long Harbour refinery was commissioned in December 2013. In June 2018, Vale once more approved the development of the US$1.7Bn underground mine. The mine will extend operations for at least 15 years (to 2033) with initial production expected in April 2021. The go ahead for the investment has been enabled through cobalt streaming agreements with Wheaton Precious Metals Corp and Cobalt 27 Capital Corp which have provided a cash injection of US$690M towards the development.
