The Volcan Project comprises the Dorado and Ojo de Agua deposits which are mixed Maricunga-type gold and high level sulphidation gold deposits. It is planned as a conventional open pit mining operation with a combined heap leach (44kt/d) and mill (11kt/d) facility, totalling 55kt/d ore. For higher grade ore, the mill will comprise a carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit with primary and secondary crushing, a high pressure grinding roll (HPGR) for tertiary crushing, grinding and agitation leaching. Lower grade ore will be heap leached. The major challenge to develop the project is the lack of water. Due to this, sea desalinated water was expected to be the option but the capital expenditure and/or the operating cost could increase significantly because water will need to be pumped for 180km and a head of above 4000masl.
