Will Indonesia’s next government ditch a plan to ban bauxite exports in 2022?

Report summary

On 17 April 2019, Indonesia’s 190-million odd voters head to the polls to elect a president, national parliament and regional legislatures. One of the most important policy areas for the mining and metals sector is what stance the next administration and wider body politic will adopt in regard to a mineral ore export ban that is slated to come into effect in 2022. With that in mind, Verisk Maplecroft has teamed up with its sister company Wood Mackenzie to analyse how Indonesia’s plan may affect its exports of bauxite specifically, and the ripple effect this may have across the global aluminium market if implemented.

Table of contents

  • Introduction
  • Jokowi 2.0 is the most likely outcome from election day
  • Indonesia’s leverage in bauxite market is much diminished
  • Indonesia will struggle to attract enough downstream investment to justify ban
  • Will the next administration bow to market realities?
